Women, Crime, and Punishment in Ancient Law and Society: The ancient Near East Crime and punishment, criminal law and its administration, are areas of ancient history that have been explored less than many other aspects of ancient civilizations. Throughout history women have been affected by crime both as victims and as offenders. In the ancient world, customary laws were created by men, formal laws were written by men, and both were interpreted and enforced by men. This two-volume work explores the role of gender in the formation and administration of ancient law and examines the many gender categories and relationships established in ancient law, including legal personhood, access to courts, citizenship, political office, religious office, professions, marriage, inheritance, and property ownership. Thus it focuses on women and crime within the context of women in the society. It presents data that has been newly discovered, underreported, or omitted from previous works on ancient law. It also reexamines and reevaluates prior interpretations and conclusions, in order to enable the silent voices of ancient women to be heard and their invisible lives to be seen in the light of modern feminist scholarship. - Dust jacket. http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ONkJ_Rj1SS8C&pg=PA75&dq=women+men+literate+babylonia&as_brr=3#PPA75,M1Syntactic Change in Akkadian In this book Guy Deutscher examines the historical development of Akkadian, the oldest recorded Semitic language and one of the earliest attested languages. Two thousand years of texts from 2500BC to 500BC provide a unique source for the study of linguistic change. The first two parts of the book present an historical grammar of sentential complementation. Part one traces the emergence of new structures, describing how finite complements first developed, and tracing the grammaticalization of the quotative construction. Part two examines the language's functional history. It looks at the evolution of linguistic structures, showing for example how finite complements and embedded questions became more widespread as other parataxis and non-finite complements receded. In the final part of the book the author puts these changes in a broader typological perspective and compares the development of Akkadian to similar processes in other languages. The emergence of finite complementation may, he suggests, be an adaptive process, related to the growing complexity of communication. This book throws new light on the nature of linguistic change and offers fresh insights on a language that has rarely been presented to non-specialists, despite its enormous historical importance. http://books.google.com/?id=XFwUxmCdG94COPTIONS: THE CIVILIZATION OF BABYLONIA AND ASSYRIA http://fax.libs.uga.edu/DS71xJ39C/ OPTIONS: LEGENDS OF BABYLON AND EGYPT IN RELATION TO HEBREW TRADITION http://fax.libs.uga.edu/BM530xK531l/ OPTIONS: THE BABYLONIAN LEGENDS OF THE CREATION http://fax.libs.uga.edu/BL1620xB7/ Women, Crime, and Punishment in Ancient Law and Society: The ancient Near East Crime and punishment, criminal law and its administration, are areas of ancient history that have been explored less than many other aspects of ancient civilizations.
